Questions, answered honestly.
We're a small team. We try not to write marketing copy when a real answer will do.
What is CalorieScan AI?
CalorieScan AI is a photo-first nutrition tracking app for iPhone. You take a photo of your meal; our AI identifies the foods, estimates portion sizes, and calculates calories, protein, carbs and fat. You can edit anything you don't agree with by typing in plain English.
How accurate is the photo recognition?
We claim ~80% accuracy on the first photo and ~95% after a quick edit. We don't claim 99% because no food-vision system reliably hits that on real-world plates. The natural-language editor is what closes the gap.
How is it different from MyFitnessPal?
MyFitnessPal is built around database search and barcode scanning. We're built around the camera and natural language. If you eat mostly home-cooked meals or restaurant food, our workflow is faster. If you live on packaged products, MFP's barcode database is deeper.
Is it free?
Yes, with limits. The free tier includes 5 photo logs per day, full database access, basic macro tracking, and no ads. Premium ($9.99/month) is unlimited photo logging, weekly review, two-way Apple Health sync, GLP-1 mode, and cycle tracking.
Do you sell my data?
No. We do not sell, trade, or share user data with advertisers or data brokers. We use industry-standard encryption and we treat your meal photos as private health data. The full policy is on the privacy page.
What platforms is it on?
iOS only as of April 2026. Android is on the roadmap but unscheduled. We're a small team and we wanted to do one platform really well first.
Does it work for vegan or vegetarian eating?
Yes. Set your diet preference in settings and the app will surface plant-based micronutrient risks (B12, iron, omega-3, calcium, iodine) in your weekly review. The photo recognition handles tofu, tempeh, seitan, and other plant proteins natively.
Does it work for people on Ozempic, Wegovy or other GLP-1s?
Yes — there's a dedicated GLP-1 mode that adjusts protein floors, sets a minimum-calorie alert (because under-eating is the bigger risk on these meds), and dampens the ‘you're under your goal’ framing.
Will it integrate with Apple Health?
Yes. Two-way sync on the Premium tier — calories, macros, weight and water flow into Apple Health, and workouts, weight and active energy flow back into the app for context.
Can I cancel anytime?
Yes. Subscriptions are managed through Apple, so you can cancel directly in your iPhone Settings. You'll keep premium access through the end of your billing period.
Do you have a streak counter?
No, intentionally. We've written about why streaks tend to backfire in nutrition apps. We focus on weekly trends instead.
Is calorie tracking right for everyone?
No. If you have a history of disordered eating, calorie tracking can become compulsive and is best done — if at all — with the supervision of a registered dietitian or therapist. We don't recommend our app for users under 18 either.
